Job Description:

The Early Childhood Special Education teacher (ECSE) provides special education services as outlined in the Individualized Education Program for preschool-aged learners (3-5 years old) in the Virginia Preschool Initiative (VPI) classroom. The ECSE Inclusion teacher works collaboratively with the VPI teacher to develop and implement district approved curriculum to ensure adequate differentiation and embedding support for students with disabilities into the VPI classroom. The ECSE Inclusion teacher documents student progress through daily and weekly data collection in order to make data-based decisions about the effectiveness of teaching and behavioral strategies. The ECSE Inclusion teacher conducts screenings, evaluations, and conducts observations to support the educational planning of students. This is a 10-month, 195 day Licensed Special Education Teacher Position, reporting to the School Adminstration.

With the Specialized Instruction Team out of Central Office, located at ACHS-Minnie Howard Campus, one (1) position for the 2026 - 2027 SY

Qualifications:



  • Education: A Bachelor's Degree from an Accredited College or University in a Related Field Required + ECSE introduction Course, Master's Degree in Early Childhood Preferred.


  • Certificates & Licenses: A Valid Virginia Department of Education Teaching Provisional, Collegiate, or PostGraduate License, with an endorsement in Early Childhood Special Education required, or eligibility to obtain the Teaching License with the appropriate Special Education endorsement upon hiring.


  • Other Qualifications:


    • Early Childhood Special Education teaching certification (Provisional or Professional)
    • The position requires experience providing direct services to preschool students in an inclusive setting.
    • Skill and ability to incorporate recommendations from division specialists for individual student needs in the classroom.
    • Ability to develop and implement individualized instructional, social and behavioral management techniques.
    • Ability to work with other professionals in a collaborative manner.




Statement of Specialized Experience:

Specialized experience for this position includes experience working with learners with autism spectrum disorders in an educational environment; conducting formal and informal assessments using curriculum-based tools or progress monitoring measures; collecting data for pre-academic, behavioral, communication, and social skills and graphically displaying data; developing individualized reinforcement systems for a variety of learners and supporting learners in inclusive educational environments for the purpose of generalizing skills across settings.

Essential Functions:



  • Implement preschool curriculum, develop individual instructional plans and help select instructional materials and strategies that are individually, developmentally, and culturally appropriate.
  • Adapt early childhood curriculum or implement behaviorally based interventions for the purpose of providing students with instructional activities to meet their educational needs.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers for the purpose of co-planning and implementation of services, accommodations, or modifications in order to meet the mandates of individual education programs.
  • Collaborate with related service providers to plan and implement strategies appropriate for each individual child.
  • Collaborate with families and a variety of community agencies for the purpose of improving the overall quality of student outcomes.
  • Assess student progress towards objectives, expectations, and/or IEP goals (e.g. behavioral, social, motor development and communication skills, etc.) using consistent data collection for the purpose of providing feedback to students, families, and administration.
  • Implement instruction in communication and social skill development at the instructional level of the students for the purpose of enhancing peer relationships and collaborative participation in the general education classroom.
  • Manage student behavior for the purpose of providing a safe and optimal learning environment using the principles of positive reinforcement and consistent implementation of behavioral techniques.
  • Support and instruct Instructional Assistants in the teaching strategies and data collection methods required and to provide the materials to complete the tasks assigned to Instructional Assistants.
  • Develop and implement IEP goals, accommodations, and services for preschool children in an inclusive environment.
  • Prepare a variety of written materials (e.g. Individual Education Programs, progress reports, attendance, etc.) for the purpose of documenting student progress and meeting mandated requirements.
  • Perform other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the educational environment.
  • May perform additional duties or tasks as designated by supervisor.



Compensation:



  • Step Placement and Salary for this position is determined by The ACPS Teachers and Other Licensed Staff Salary Scale
  • This position qualifies for an additional step placement on the Licensed Salary Scale under the umbrella of Specialized Instruction.



Clearances:



  • Criminal Justice Fingerprint/Background Clearance.
  • Tuberculosis Skin Test.
  • Public Health Compliance - Must follow safety and health protocols.
