Job Summary The Phlebotomy Manager is responsible for the strategic leadership, operational oversight, and performance management of phlebotomy services across inpatient, outpatient, and clinic settings. This role oversees a team of 75+ full-time equivalents (FTEs) and ensures high-quality, safe, and efficient specimen collection services in alignment with organizational goals, regulatory requirements, and patient care standards. The Phlebotomy Manager collaborates closely with laboratory leadership, nursing teams, physicians, and administrative staff to support clinical excellence and patient satisfaction. Education & Experience Requirements * Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, or related field or equivalent education, training experience is required * Minimum of 2 years of progressive phlebotomy experience preferred * At least 4 years of clinical experience in the laboratory required * Minimum of 2 years of leadership or supervisory experience required * Experience managing large teams (75+ FTEs) strongly preferred * Certification as a Phlebotomy Technician (e.g., ASCP, NHA, or equivalent) preferred Key Responsibilities Operational Leadership * Provide oversight of phlebotomy operations across inpatient units, outpatient centers, and ambulatory clinics * Ensure adequate staffing levels, scheduling efficiency, and productivity management * Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) such as turnaround time, specimen quality, and patient satisfaction * Implement and maintain standardized procedures and workflows across all service areas. Team Management * Directly oversee supervisors and/or team leads across multiple locations * Manage recruitment, onboarding, training, performance evaluations, and corrective actions * Foster a culture of accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement * Lead staff development initiatives and succession planning Quality & Compliance * Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, OSHA, and other regulatory standards * Monitor specimen integrity, labeling accuracy, and safety practices * Lead quality improvement initiatives and root cause analysis efforts * Maintain competency assessment programs for all phlebotomy staff Financial & Strategic Oversight * Develop and manage departmental budgets * Monitor labor costs, productivity benchmarks, and resource utilization * Participate in strategic planning initiatives and service expansion efforts * Identify opportunities for operational efficiencies and cost savings Patient Experience & Service Excellence * Promote patient-centered care and service recovery processes * Address patient and provider concerns promptly and effectively * Support initiatives to enhance patient satisfaction and engagement Core Competencies * Strong leadership and team-building skills * Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities * Knowledge of laboratory information systems (LIS) and electronic health records (EHR) * Data-driven decision-making skills * Ability to manage multiple locations and competing priorities * Strong understanding of regulatory and accreditation standards Work Environment This position operates across hospital inpatient units, outpatient laboratory settings, and clinic environments. The role may require occasional travel between sites and flexibility to address operational needs. Core Competencies 1.
