What Your Job Will Be Like

We are seeking a R&D S&E Systems Engineer to join our dynamic team that manages the end-to-end monitoring of satellite payloads and the ground-system data management architectures that support mission operations. In this role, you will apply systems engineering to define and manage requirements, interfaces, configurations, and verification approaches across pre-launch testing, early on-orbit test, state-of-health monitoring, anomaly resolution, and lifecycle performance assessment. You will also help ensure reliable data flow and traceability through databases and software-enabled pipelines used to deliver mission data products and operational insights.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
  • Partner with customers, stakeholders, and project management to negotiate, define, and manage system requirements that enable mission function and performance.
  • Develop system concepts and architectures, including operational concepts, interface definitions, and subsystem allocations.
  • Perform functional decomposition of system requirements into subsystem-level functional, performance, and constraint requirements.
  • Lead or contribute to conceptual trade studies and evaluate competing characteristics among system elements to identify the most effective integrated solution.
  • Plan and support verification and validation (V&V) strategies, including test/analysis/inspection/demonstration methods, acceptance criteria, and generation of Objective Quality Evidence (OQE).
  • Coordinate with subsystem teams and cross-functional partners to integrate subsystems, resolve interface issues, and ensure end-to-end system performance.
  • Support and/or lead anomaly resolution and root cause analysis, including evaluation of corrective actions within the system trade space.
  • Use physical and computational simulation/analysis (as appropriate to the program) to evaluate system behavior and support design decisions and verification.
  • Apply lifecycle systems engineering considerations (development through operations/sustainment) to ensure robust and realizable solutions.
  • Promote risk mitigation by proactively identifying and mitigating requirements, design, development, and integration risks.

Due to the nature of this work the selected applicant must be able to work onsite.

Salary Range

$117,500 - $235,700

*Salary range is estimated, and actual salary will be determined after consideration of the selected candidate's experience and qualifications, and application of any approved geographic salary differential.

Qualifications We Require

  • A Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline and five (5) years of directly relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of directly relevant education and engineering or scientific experience that demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform independent research and development.
  • Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearance
Qualifications We Desire

The ideal R&D S&E Systems Engineering candidate for Sandia National Laboratories will in addition possess the following:

  • Graduate degree in Engineering or a highly related field where an independent research project was a graduation requirement (e.g., independent project, thesis, or dissertation).
  • Experience working with Nuclear Security Enterprise (NSE) laboratories and plants including Pantex, Kansas City National Security Campus (KCNSC), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory, and Kansas City National Security Campus/New Mexico Operations (KCNSC/NMO).
  • Experience working on engineering design, qualification, production, or related modeling/simulation projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams.

Also, for this posting we are seeking individuals with the following experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in systems engineering across one or more of the following:
    • requirements definition/management
    • functional decomposition and allocation
    • system architecture and concept development
    • subsystem integration and interface definition
    • trade studies and design optimization
    • verification/validation planning and execution support
  • Experience working on complex, multidisciplinary systems (e.g., aerospace, high-consequence, advanced manufacturing, complex mechanical/electromechanical systems).
  • Experience collaborating with internal/external stakeholders and translating stakeholder needs into implementable technical requirements.
  • Ability to document engineering work products (e.g., requirements, architectures, test plans, verification matrices, decision records) to support reviews and acceptance.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills, including root cause analysis and evaluating solution options in a constrained trade space.
  • Experience serving as subsystem technical lead/owner on a complex program, including end-to-end responsibility from concept through test/readiness.
  • Demonstrated experience in configuration management and change control, including participation in change boards and managing lifecycle documentation.
  • Experience developing or improving engineering processes (e.g., workflow definition, documentation standards, risk management processes).
  • Experience with test infrastructure development, test execution, and defining acceptance criteria for operational readiness.
About Our Team

The Integrated Data Exploitation & Analysis department is dedicated to the monitoring and management of satellite payloads, with a primary focus on the Global Burst Detector (GBD) sensors. These sensors, integrated with Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites, provide continuous coverage as a vital component of the United States Nuclear Detonation Detection System (USNDS). Our core mission encompasses pre-launch testing, early on-orbit testing, state-of-health monitoring, sensor/system configuration, anomaly detection, lifetime degradation assessment, and the management of USNDS data through databases and software development for ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) activities to ensure the GBD sensors operate effectively and meet national requirements.

In addition to our primary mission, the department serves as system administrators for Center 6700 and various other USNDS projects. We also support secondary initiatives by delivering advanced data analytics and state-of-health metrics for various satellite sensor projects. Through our expertise in data analysis and operational oversight, we play a crucial role in enhancing national security and supporting the broader landscape of satellite mission operations.

Posting Duration

This posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of three (3) calendar days, including the 'posting date'. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.

Security Clearance

Sandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.

Applicants offered employment with Sandia are subject to a federal background investigation to meet the requirements for access to classified information or matter if the duties of the position require a DOE security clearance. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause a clearance to be denied or terminated by DOE, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.

EEO

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status and any other protected class under state or federal law.

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs

If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.

If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
