Job Description

I. Major Responsibilities:

1. Provides patient visitation, spiritual support, crisis intervention and bereavement support to patients and families of all faith traditions according to the plan of care.
2. Offers hope, encouragement, and spiritual presence in the midst of grief, trauma, and unexpected outcomes for patients, families, and staff.
3. Networks and coordinates pastoral care with area clergy to provide interfaith pastoral visitation and sacramental ministry to patients, their families and caregivers.
4. Documents pastoral and sacramental interventions in the medical record.
5. Covers for the Spiritual Counselor during vacations and other time off.
6. Works collaboratively with the Hospice Interdisciplinary group members, hospital staff and local clergy as needed.
7. Assumes responsibility for own on-going professional development and spiritual well-being.
8. Meets on a scheduled basis with the Spiritual Counselor and / or the Clinical Team Supervisor Hospice for purposes of communication, collaboration, planning and evaluation.
9. References payer websites as needed to acquire knowledge and understanding of appropriate follow up actions.

2. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed.
3. Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
4. Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
5. Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility and acceptance toward all employees, patients and visitors.
6. Maintains regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
7. Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.

II. Position Qualifications:

License/Certification/Education:
Required
:

1. Bachelor's degree in theology, pastoral ministry or a related field.
2. Evidence of current standing or endorsement or faculties for ministry by an appropriate denominational authority or faith group.
3. Valid and unrestricted driver's license recognized by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and access to a reliable, insured vehicle required.

Preferred:
1. A minimum of 1-2 units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE).
2. Current certification (or eligibility) as a chaplain by the Association of Professional Chaplains or a similar organization such as National Association of Catholic Chaplains is a plus.

Experience/Skills:
Required:

1. Knowledge of theories, principles, and concepts across a broad base of religions.
2. Ability to cope effectively with high stress which results from responding to trauma, grief, loss and illness.
3. Ability to lead, guide and motivate staff.
4. Ability to collaborate with others.
5. Must possess exceptional people skills.
6. Strong communication skills, especially the ability to listen.
7. The ability to effectively support a complete, high performing and holistic pastoral care program in hospice program.
8. The ability to read, write and speak clearly in English.

Preferred:
1. Two years of previous experience delivering pastoral care in a clinical environment.
2. Experience in bereavement.

Unless certification, licensure or registration is required, an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed in this description may be substituted for the above requirements.

Department-specific competencies, including age-specific competencies and their measurements will be developed and maintained in the individual departments. The competencies will be maintained and attached to the departmental job description. Responsible managers will review competencies with position incumbents.

III. Physical Demands and Environmental Conditions:

Work is considered sedentary. Position requires work indoors in a normal office environment.
