PURPOSE:
The Level 1 Electrician (Mastery Level) is a highly skilled professional responsible for the safe, reliable installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of complex electrical systems across refinery operations. This role serves as a technical expert, providing leadership, mentorship, and direction to other electricians and contractors while ensuring compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory standards.
KEY OBJECTIVES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Independently troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair complex electrical systems, including:
- High and low voltage systems
- Motors, compressors, and critical rotating equipment
- Switchgear, substations, and motor control centers (MCCs)
- Distributed Control Systems (DCS) interfaces and field wiring
- Lead and execute critical maintenance and turnaround activities
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to junior electricians and apprentices
- Plan and coordinate electrical work with operations, engineering, and contractors
- Read and interpret advanced electrical drawings, one-lines, loop diagrams, and specifications
- Ensure strict adherence to all safety protocols, including:
- Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
- Arc flash and electrical safety boundaries
- Hazardous area classification requirements
- Perform equipment inspections and predictive/preventive maintenance
- Identify reliability issues and recommend improvements
- Support root cause failure analysis (RCFA) and incident investigations
- Verify quality and compliance of contractor electrical work
REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCES:
- High school diploma or GED
- Completion of a formal electrical apprenticeship or equivalent industrial experience
- Journeyman Electrician certification or equivalent experience
- Extensive experience in industrial or refinery electrical maintenance
PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCES:
- Two-year associate's or technical degree in maintenance preferred
- NCCER or equivalent advanced electrical certification
- Experience with refinery-specific systems and processes
- Working knowledge of instrumentation and controls
- Experience with SAP or CMMS systems
COMPETENCIES:
- Advanced knowledge of:
- Electrical theory and application
- AC/DC systems, power distribution, and motor controls
- Hazardous (classified) locations (Class I, Div 1 & 2)
- Electrical codes and standards (e.g., NFPA 70/NEC, NFPA 70E)

- Troubleshoot complex electrical and control systems independently
