Manager, IT - OIT AV Engineering and Design

Duke University's Office of Information Technology (OIT) is seeking a Manager, IT - AV Engineering and Design to lead the AV Engineering team supporting Duke's academic, research, and administrative environments. This role combines people leadership, technical strategy, and hands-on collaboration to advance AV services across the University, with additional alignment to Health System needs.

In this position, you'll work closely with campus partners, OIT colleagues, Facilities Management and, where appropriate, Medical System stakeholders to design, implement, and support innovative audiovisual and interactive technology solutions. You'll also partner with the Manager of AV Integration and Support to ensure a seamless lifecycle from consultation and design through deployment and ongoing support.

Minimum Qualifications



  • Bachelor's degree in media technology or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum of three years of experience developing and/or implementing digital or interactive media solutions
  • Demonstrated experience leading technical teams or projects in a higher education or large enterprise environment
  • Exceptional knowledge of audiovisual system design, integration, and automation tools
  • Experience with AV manufacturers and platforms such as Crestron, Q-SYS, Extron, Logitech, Vaddio, Shure, Biamp and commercial AV display control platforms amongst other industry solutions inclusive of AVoIP
  • Strong knowledge of collaboration technologies including Zoom, Zoom Rooms, and Logitech solutions
  • Proven project management skills, including leading internal teams and external vendors
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills



Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience working in higher education or healthcare environments
  • Familiarity with federated identity management system integrations
  • Experience working with APIs, XML, or scripting in Unixlike environments
  • Technical experience integrating AV and media systems with websites using HTML, CSS, and content management systems
  • Experience using project management tools such as Asana, XTenAV, or similar platforms



Other Requirements



  • Ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously in a fastpaced environment
  • Participation in meetings, planning sessions, and occasional afterhours activities as required to support projects and services

Essential Job Duties



  • Lead and manage the OIT AV Engineering and Design team, including hiring, performance management, professional development, and staff utilization
  • Set direction and strategy for AV engineering services to support an expanding and evolving service portfolio
  • Provide daytoday operational oversight, including ticket queue management, team meetings, coaching, and service quality monitoring
  • Oversee and contribute to AV system architecture, design, and project implementation across academic and administrative environments
  • Collaborate early in the project lifecycle with campus stakeholders, OIT Media Architecture, Network Engineering, facilities, and Medical System partners
  • Partner closely with the Manager of AV Integration and Support to align workflows across design, implementation, and support
  • Define and implement AV monitoring and reporting metrics to improve uptime, support efficiency, and service quality
  • Research emerging AV and interactive technologies and lead evaluation and exploratory initiatives
  • Develop and maintain technical documentation, including system designs, asbuilt drawings, and service materials
  • Represent Duke University in peer forums, collaborative organizations, and industry conferences
  • Participate in OIT and Duke Digital Media Community initiatives
  • Perform other duties and special projects as assigned
