Job Description
Virginia's community colleges have a 50-year track record of educational excellence and innovation to serve the needs of our citizens and strengthen the Commonwealth's economy. When Virginia's General Assembly established the Virginia Community College System in 1966, the need for a comprehensive system was well known. Over the two decades after the end of World War II, leaders in government, business, professional sectors, and academia had called for a new approach to providing educational opportunity. A key concern was Virginia's ability to develop a skilled and knowledgeable workforce to expand the state's economy. Today our community colleges give every Virginian the opportunity to gain a quality education. With 23 colleges on 40 campuses located throughout the state, Virginia's Community Colleges are committed to serving Virginia families, helping them acquire the knowledge and skills to seize the opportunities of today and tomorrow.

The Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs provides visionary leadership and strategic direction for the design, development, and continuous improvement of academic programs across Virginia's 23 community colleges. This position is responsible for ensuring academic excellence, integrity, and alignment with the VCCS mission and strategic plan, to deliver high-quality, accessible, and affordable education that supports student success, transfer readiness, and workforce competitiveness. Reporting to the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic and Workforce programs, this position works in concert with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the Associate Vice Chancellor of Career Education and Workforce, the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Institutional Research, and the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success and Professional Development.
The Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs coordinates and manages the development and maintenance of State Board policies related to the academic enterprise, including program approval processes, transfer policies and articulation agreements, dual enrollment, credit for prior learning, and placement policies. The Associate Vice Chancellor also leads academically related efforts that support the system-wide strategic plan, improving student outcomes, and student completions. The Associate Vice Chancellor also develops and maintains policies to support online, hybrid, and competency-based program delivery to provide opportunities for students to learn through multiple modalities. The position oversees implementation and evaluation of system-wide instructional technologies, including the online library and the learning management system. The Associate Vice Chancellor provides executive-level support for the Senior Vice Chancellor for Academic and Workforce Programs and engages in system-level strategic planning and evaluation processes.
The Associate Vice Chancellor leads efforts to advance the "One System, One Experience" approach by promoting consistency in academic standards, curricular innovation, instructional quality, and assessment across the System. The position works collaboratively with system office leadership, chief academic officers, chief workforce officers, chief student affairs officers, and state and national partners to strengthen the academic enterprise and position the VCCS as a national leader in community college education and workforce relevance. The position is supported by five (5) System Office academic departments.
