Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY: The Lifeguard supervises the safety of individuals, students, and staff in and around the pool and provides water skills instruction to program participants. Additionally, this role prevents and responds to emergencies by maintaining safe pool facilities, enforcing pool policies, giving advice on water safety, conducting water rescues, and controlling unruly behavior if necessary.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Actively guard and scan the pool area to maintain constant surveillance of individuals served, students, and staff in and around the indoor therapeutic and outdoor recreational pool facilities to ensure a safe aquatic environment
  • Respond quickly to emergency situations and provide care and treatment as required including but not limited to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED), Spinal Injury Management, and crisis intervention, until the arrival of emergency medical services to ensure the health, safety, and wellbeing of individuals served, students, and staff
  • Maintain pool areas, locker rooms, decks, filtration system, and pool and rescue equipment including, but not limited to, adaptive floatation devices, life jackets, lift, shower, and pool chairs through proper storage, use, and instruction on use of these areas and items for individuals served, students, and staff via formal orientations and regular sanitization of all pool areas, locker rooms, and equipment to ensure a safe and clean environment at all times
  • Enforce pool policies/regulations including, but not limited to, ensuring proper and appropriate attire is worn by individuals served, students, and staff using the pools and that all are adhering to proper poolside behavior (e.g., no horseplay, no running on deck, etc.) to ensure pool safety; provide initial and regular orientations for students and staff regarding such policies, rules, and regulations in order to proactively ensure proper behavior in and around all areas/aspects of the swimming pool
  • Prepare, maintain, and send appropriate reports to supervisor including, but not limited to, activity analysis, incident log, duty log, accident reports, aquatic assessments, and hourly water chemistry record to ensure proper and timely record keeping of and response to facility events and maintenance
  • Provide swim instruction to all levels of individuals as outlined by the American Red Cross Water Safety Learn to Swim Instructor Certification course materials to increase students' ability to safely navigate the aquatic environment and build swimming skills
  • Assist individuals with specific needs including, but not limited to, navigating/using the locker room and deck within the pool facilities as needed to ensure inclusion, access, and safe use of pool facilities
  • Perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), use the Automated External Defibrillator (AED), Spinal Injury Management, and crisis intervention using agency-trained protocols
  • Perform other duties as assigned

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/SKILLS REQUIREMENTS:

  • High school diploma or graduate equivalency diploma (GED) and at least 18 years of age
  • Current certification as a lifeguard by a recognized and qualified source of training (e.g., American Red Cross, YMCA, United State Lifesaving Association, American Aquatics & Safety Training, etc.)
  • Current certification as a Water Safety Instructor by a recognized and qualified source of training
  • Current certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED), and First Aid
  • Knowledge of pool safety procedures
  • Working knowledge of pool and aquatic equipment
  • Experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities highly preferred
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment practical skills test in the water
  • Demonstrated strong safety consciousness and ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize and respond to emergencies through knowledge and application of lifeguard surveillance and rescue techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team
  • Demonstrated strong attention to detail
  • Demonstrated excellent judgment with the ability to independently solve problems and make decisions with little or no need for direct supervision
  • Demonstrated ability to anticipate future needed changes or identify problem areas and take effective actions
  • Must possess excellent customer interaction, collaboration, and written and verbal communication skills
  • Must have current, valid driver's license in state of residence, three (3) years driving experience in the United States, and acceptable driving record
