Under the general supervision of the Mobile Crew Manager, this position plans, coordinates, and oversees the work of crews performing both complex and routine maintenance and construction projects using heavy equipment. Responsibilities include interpreting construction plans, evaluating work progress, assigning personnel and equipment, conducting performance evaluations, and providing coaching and training. The role also participates in interview panels, coordinates and performs preventive and corrective maintenance on vehicles and equipment, and maintains required maintenance records. In addition, the position operates heavy equipment as needed to support or supplement Heavy Equipment Operators. Duties also include maintaining computerized data entry and employee records, ensuring jobsite safety for staff and the public, and promoting a safe work environment across all operations.
Note: Reports daily to Area 5, 45012 Brookfield Corporate Drive, Chantilly, VA, and is dispatched to assigned parks. In addition to hauling and equipment operation, this role contributes to general labor tasks as part of the broader maintenance team. This is a 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday, with overtime required as needed. Occasional weekend, evening, and holiday work may be required. Positions may be reassigned to other maintenance operation locations. Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the job. This position is designated as Emergency Service Personnel.
*A $2,500 signing bonus is available to new county employees hired in the Heavy Equipment Operator position. Applicants must possess a valid CDL at time of application submission to be eligible.

- Operates equipment engaged in complex and routine maintenance and construction projects;
- Interprets construction plans;
- Performs routine operations, to include excavating, gouge cutting, leveling, demolition, stump clearing, sloping, spreading, stripping, and pushing trees and rocks from land preparatory to renovating roads, landscaping and site development;
- Drives semi-tractor trailers hauling sludge, trash or petroleum;
- Transports heavy construction equipment to designated locations;
- Prepares travel records;
- Performs equipment maintenance, such as changing oil, checking fluids, diagnosing tread wear, replacing batteries and troubleshooting problems;
- May serve as a lead worker over a crew of laborers;
- Monitors construction projects to a successful and timely completion;
- Supervises safety practice and regulation during construction projects;
- Engages in safe working practices and complies with safety programs and guidelines;
- Reports and monitors unsafe working conditions;
- Complies with safety competencies.

Employment Standards
-
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to completion of the tenth grade, and three years of experience operating motorized equipment and/or semi-tractor trailers, as appropriate.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
- Driver's License (Required)
- Class A CDL-Required upon hire
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Three or more years of supervisory experience with crews of 4 or more.
- Three or more years' experience operating a wide variety of heavy construction equipment to include but not limited to backhoes, motor graders, excavators, tracked and rubber tire loaders, tandem dump trucks and tractor trailers.
- Experience in asphalt paving operations
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to lift 50 pounds frequently. All duties may be performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
