Department Summary

Established in 1970 and formalized as a department within the Campus Life Division of Student Affairs in 2003, the Community Programs Office (CPO) serves as an essential resource for the UCLA student body. Originally housed in Dodd Hall, the CPO transitioned to the Student Activities Center following the student-led SPARC referendum in 2000. The department provides comprehensive academic, professional, and personal support through programs focused on educational advancement, career development, and access to basic and essential needs resources, while fostering collaboration and engagement within the campus community. By connecting students with these opportunities, the CPO helps them develop the leadership skills, career readiness, and practical problem-solving abilities necessary for future success. Through continuous program development and direct support, the CPO remains dedicated to ensuring that students have the tools and resources they need to achieve their goals.
Position Summary

The Assistant Director supports student persistence, academic success, and graduation within the Community Programs Office. The incumbent serves as a primary mentor and advisor to student leaders, providing expert guidance on resource allocation, fiscal sustainability, and assessing programmatic impacts on student learning. A cornerstone of this role is the direct supervision of the manager for the Writing Success and Math Success program, ensuring these academic interventions effectively support degree completion. The Assistant Director plays a critical role in university-wide student success initiatives by serving on the Bruin Readmission Program (BRP), Dismissal Appeals, and Basic Needs committees, where they provide essential feedback on student standing and support protocols. Through individualized advising and instructional workshops, the position helps undergraduate and graduate students navigate university policies while balancing leadership commitments with rigorous academic requirements, ensuring the long-term success of the student body.

Qualifications

  • Higher Education Field 3 years min. providing guidance to student populations. (Preferred)
  • Analytical skills to assess programs and procedures in order to assist students in program and funding proposal development and program assessment and evaluation. (Required)
  • Ability to recognize problems and generate alternatives or offer solutions based on knowledge of procedures and existing guidelines. (Required)
  • Demonstrated skill in employing fundamental counseling techniques with sensitivity sufficient to assist students in making program-related decisions. (Required)
  • Working knowledge of student programs and activities in a large, complex university setting. (Required)
  • Demonstrated interest, ability, and experience in working with student groups and ability to serve as a catalyst for collaborative efforts. (Required)
  • Demonstrated ability to develop theoretical models for leadership training workshops to enhance the leadership capabilities of student population. (Required)
  • Demonstrated skill in program planning, implementation, administration, and evaluation with specially targeted students. (Required)
  • Skills in counseling methodologies sufficient to assist students in making strategic plans about their future. (Required)
  • Ability to train others in techniques of program development, management, assessment, and evaluation. (Required)
  • Knowledge of educational theory and literature related to best practices for academic success, community service, civic engagement, and leadership. (Required)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the educational process and its relationship to matriculation and success in higher education. (Required)
