Department Information

The Center for Advanced Communications Policy (CACP) focuses on key issues that influence the development, implementation and adoption of cutting-edge, advanced communications technologies. CACP work includes assessment of policy issues and production of regulatory filings, identification of future options for innovation, and articulation of a clearer vision of the ever-changing technology landscape. Center research areas include wireless communications and platforms; accessible technology design and use for people with disabilities; emergency alerts and communications; higher education policy and evaluation; workforce development and employment for people with disabilities; new communications modes such as social media and online participatory platforms; STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) education, and the cultural impact of technology shifts. CACP, in its role as an objective and neutral source, collaborates with government, industry and academia at the national, local, state, and international levels. In addition to a vigorous agenda of national level activities, CACP has successfully partnered with a number of higher educational institutions across the U.S. in the generation of grants, project development and academic and professional publications. The Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts comprises Georgia Tech's three Reserve Officers Training Corps units (Air Force, Army, and Navy), six schools (Economics; History and Sociology; Literature, Media, and Communication; Modern Languages; Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter School of Public Policy; and the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs), and two centers (Center for Advanced Communications Policy and Writing and Communication Program).

Job Summary

The Research Technologist (Open Rank) directly supports the Center for Advanced Communications Policy (CACP) by providing primary technology, software development, and maintenance support to both faculty and staff members. This position will support shared technologies (hardware and software) and lab equipment used to support the variety of research projects and initiatives within CACP. The Research Technologist will interface directly with the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts (IAC) enterprise IT group as necessary to ensure that CACP equipment and operations are in compliance with GT IT policies. The Research Technologist will directly support CACP lab operations, data collection, equipment configuration and deployment, and maintenance of existing specialized research equipment found in the Human Factors Lab. The Research Technologist may also directly contribute to funded research projects and will be encouraged to develop their own funded research interests through collaborations with other researchers and by submitting and obtaining funding from industry, state, foundation, or Federal sponsors. CACP participates in human performance research, home automation studies, Internet of Things (IoT) research and data collection, artificial Intelligence research, and rapid prototyping of innovative technologies. The Research Technologist should have an expertise with technology, the application of artificial intelligence to solve complex problems, electronic component assembly, basic programming/scripting, basic web development, and technologies associated with rapid prototyping.

Required Qualifications

This position vacancy is an open rank announcement. Bachelor's Degree

Research Technologist II

A Master's degree and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or

A Master's degree and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree, or

A Doctoral degree.

Preferred Qualifications

Master's Degree in a related field.

Proposed Salary

The anticipated salary range is $70,000-$80,000 commensurate with experience and qualifications.
