Overview

Join the Distribution Engineerings System Design department where you can have the opportunity to build the electric grid of the future. The System Design department is seeking a highly motivated and versatile Engineer (2L) to join our team as we lead the clean energy transition. System Design is responsible for overall system analysis, design, standards, high tension, renewable and distributed generation analysis and interconnections, and engineering computer applications. The ideal candidate will have experience in the design of electrical facilities and equipment, as well as relevant industry standards. We are looking for candidates who are self-starters and possess a deep sense of personal accountability, are flexible to handle multiple diverse projects and changing priorities, can make sound business decisions, and are excellent communicators.

The Engineer works with vendors to develop new equipment and update designs for application on the electric distribution system, with a focus on medium voltage switchgear, ensuring compliance with industry standards as well as company requirements. The Engineer will take ownership of their tasks and pursue opportunities that enhance the operation and design of the distribution system and the associated equipment. To perform the job functions, the Engineer must possess knowledge of switchgear design and operation, power load flow, and relay protection. The Engineer reviews procurement proposals and performs product design evaluations. As part of the equipment design and application review, the Engineer is expected to perform engineering studies that comprise of system protection coordination, system reliability, or root-cause of failure analysis. In addition, The Engineer also creates, reviews and updates the Con Edison Distribution Equipment specifications (operation, maintenance, and purchase and test) and construction drawings. The Engineer solicits feedback from relevant stakeholders to further improve the clarity of engineering procedures and makes presentations or hands-on technical training to our internal customers. Further, the Engineer provides engineering technical expertise, including of industry standards, and assists the field in troubleshooting any equipment installation or operation issues, as well as monitor and analyze equipment issues to ensure safety.

Responsibilities

Core Responsibilities
  • Lead the design, development, and continuous improvement of electric distribution equipment including medium voltage switchgear, interrupters, switches, and disconnect devices to support safe and reliable system operations.
  • Develop, review, and maintain engineering specifications, drawings, and technical documentation. Ensure equipment designs and specifications comply with company standards and applicable regulations and industry standards including IEEE, NESC, and ANSI.
  • Evaluate and approve equipment designs, vendor proposals, and manufacturer fabrication and testing processes through engineering reviews, factory tests, and analysis of vendor testing results. Perform engineering analysis, technical studies, and economic evaluations to determine optimal equipment design features and assess emerging technologies.
  • Evaluate the design and performance of protection equipment, protection settings, and protection schemes to support reliable and coordinated system operation.
  • Serve as a technical liaison between engineering, field operations, vendors, and internal stakeholders to coordinate equipment development, implementation, and issue resolution. Develop and oversee engineering and field test plans to support the validation and performance evaluation of new or existing equipment.
  • Conduct field visits to substations and other system and/or customer locations to observe equipment operation, support testing and analysis, and ensure engineering solutions align with field conditions and operational requirements. Monitor equipment performance in the field, investigate operational issues and failures, and perform root cause analysis to improve equipment reliability and system performance.
  • Collaborate with Supply Chain, Purchasing, Cost Management, EH&S, engineering groups, vendors, and manufacturers to support equipment procurement, development, and deployment. Support purchasing and project activities related to engineering initiatives, including coordination of purchase orders when required.
  • Provide technical guidance and engineering support to Electric Operations personnel and field crews on equipment operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting. Identify technical issues and opportunities for process or equipment improvements while exercising sound engineering judgment in a dynamic work environment.
  • Represent Distribution Engineering in meetings, technical reviews, and site visits, and present technical information to internal stakeholders, management, and external organizations. Maintain and expand technical expertise within the assigned discipline and stay current with advancements in technology, equipment design, and industry practices.
  • Perform additional engineering assignments, regulatory or PSC mandated projects, and other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Required Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and minimum of 4 years of related engineering work experience in electrical distribution design and construction. Experience in electric protection coordination
Preferred Education/Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering and minimum 4 years of related engineering work experience and experience with electrical distribution design and construction, focused on medium voltage switchgear. Experience in electric protection coordination
Relevant Work Experience
  • Knowledge of substations, Underground Network and Overhead Electrical system, as well as knowledge of advanced electrical concepts, including power systems, required.
  • Electric construction or operations experience, as well as engineering experience in the design of electrical distribution system, and electrical facilities or equipment, required.
  • Knowledge of electrical equipment and industry standards related to switchgear, switches, and interrupters, including: IEEE stds 386, C37.20.2, C37.20.3, C37.20.4, C37.20.9, C37.62, C37.63, C37.75, C57.12.32, preferred.
  • Possess knowledge and/or experience in the physical installation, maintenance, and testing of electrical equipment, preferably to also including Field experience involving the electric distribution system or medium voltage switchgear, preferred.
  • Evaluating and approving equipment based on vendor testing results, preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Relay Protection and Control Systems, with a preference for demonstrated experience performing relay coordination studies preferred.
  • Experience writing Engineering specifications and Operating Procedures, preferred.
  • Experience understanding and reviewing engineering sketches, drawings, electrical diagrams, one-line diagrams, and riser diagrams. This also includes the ability to understand and interpret schematic diagrams, Engineering issued installation diagrams, field construction drawings and layouts, as well as ability to provide guidance in the creation of these drawings and schematics, preferred.
  • Experience performing root cause analysis and issue engineering reports, preferred.
  • Programming and AutoCAD experience, including ability to review and update vendor provided files, preferred.

Additional Physical Demands
  • The selected candidate will be assigned a System Emergency Assignment (i.e., an emergency response role) and will be expected to work non-business hours during emergencies, which may include nights, weekends, and holidays.

  • Must be able to work rotating shifts and/or extended hours as operational needs and/or emergencies dictate, as needed.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment as required, during visits to various work sites.
