JOB TITLE: Machinist II

Purpose:
Set up, operate, and maintain a variety of conventional, CNC, and special-purpose machining and testing equipment to fabricate and verify high-quality metallic and nonmetallic door components. Ensure production goals are met through precision machining, accurate testing, and consistent adherence to engineering and safety standards.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Set up, operate, and troubleshoot CNC, milling, boring, drilling, tapping, threading, lathe, punch press, shear, band saw, and press brake equipment.

  • Program CNC machines using G & M codes or conversational programming languages.

  • Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, and hoists as required.

  • Perform setup, operation, and data recording for fabric testing equipment.

  • Accurately record, maintain, and review test and production data.

  • Read, interpret, and apply blueprints, engineering drawings, and work orders to ensure parts meet design specifications.

  • Design and utilize jigs, fixtures, and gauges to maintain quality and precision within tight tolerances.

  • Perform layout, assembly, and teardown operations as needed to change over or prepare machines for new jobs.

  • Conduct routine maintenance and minor repairs on shop equipment; document service actions and report issues promptly.

  • Collaborate with engineers, programmers, and production staff to resolve machining, testing, or assembly concerns.

  • Monitor inventory levels, perform cycle counts, and maintain accurate materials documentation.

  • Train coworkers in machine setup, operation, and safety procedures.

  • Support and adhere to the company's quality management system and continuous improvement initiatives.

  • Float between machining centers to ensure production schedules are consistently met.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Produce parts to engineering specifications and company quality standards.

  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work environment.

  • Suggest and implement improvements to products and processes.

  • Maintain accurate records of work performed and materials used.

Education and/or Experience

  • Associate's degree or equivalent from a two-year technical school,orsix months to one year of related experience/training,oran equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Prior CNC and conventional machining experience preferred; programming experience strongly desired.

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong ability to interpret blueprints, schematics, and process documentation.

  • Proficient in applying mathematical concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and geometric tolerancing to machining tasks.

  • Effective problem-solving and reasoning skills to address nonstandard production situations.

  • Basic computer proficiency for operating CNC interfaces and maintaining documentation.

  • Clear oral and written communication skills for reporting and team collaboration.

Physical Demands

Regularly required to stand, walk, reach, and use hands for handling materials and operating machinery. Frequently required to sit, bend, kneel, or crouch. Must regularly lift/move up to 25 lbs and occasionally up to 50 lbs (up to 100 lbs with assistance). Vision requirements include close, peripheral, color, and distance vision with the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Regular exposure to moving mechanical parts, vibration, and loud noise. Occasionally exposed to fumes, airborne particles, caustic chemicals, or risk of electrical shock. Safety gear must be worn at all times. Reasonable accommodations may be made for individuals with disabilities.
