Inova Schar Cancer Institute is looking for a dedicated OncoGeneralist Physician to join the team. This role will be full-time Sign-on bonus and relocation assistance eligible.

Position Summary:

The OncoGeneralist is an Internal Medicine-trained physician with specialized expertise in cancer survivorship care who serves as the clinical leader of Inova's survivorship program. The OncoGeneralist provides comprehensive care for patients transitioning from active cancer treatment to survivorship, addressing the acute medical, physical, emotional, psychosocial, and sexual health concerns that commonly arise following completion of therapy.

The OncoGeneralist functions as a survivorship specialist during this critical transition period, helping patients navigate the often-complex aftermath of cancer treatment while establishing individualized plans for long-term health maintenance and recovery.

A central responsibility of this role is the development of a health-system-wide survivorship model that equips primary care providers with the knowledge, tools, and confidence necessary to provide longitudinal survivorship care. Through education, clinical pathways, consultation, and collaborative care models, the OncoGeneralist will build survivorship capacity across the Inova Health System, ensuring that cancer survivors receive high-quality care close to home while maintaining access to specialty expertise when needed.

The long-term vision is a tiered survivorship model in which patients receive specialized survivorship care during the immediate post-treatment period and are subsequently transitioned to appropriately trained primary care providers for ongoing management.

OncoGeneralist Physician Job Responsibilities:

  • Transitional Survivorship Care

    • Provide specialized survivorship care for patients transitioning from active cancer treatment

  • Symptom Management

    • Assess and manage common survivorship-related concerns

  • Psychosocial Survivorship Care

    • Evaluate the emotional, psychological, and social needs of cancer survivors.

  • Care Coordination

    • Facilitate seamless transitions from oncology-led care to primary care-led survivorship management.

  • Survivorship Program Development

    • Lead the development and expansion of Inova's comprehensive survivorship program

  • Primary Care Survivorship Education

    • Develop and implement survivorship education and training programs for primary care providers across Inova

  • Survivorship Network Development

    • Build and support a network of survivorship-trained primary care providers across the health system

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education: Doctor of Medicine degree from an accredited institution. Board eligible or board certified in Internal Medicine

  • Experience: successful completion of internal medicine residency program.

  • Licensure: Current unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Virginia.

  • Certification: Basic Life Support (BLS) upon start.

  • Payer Credentialing: Ability to successfully complete the credentialing process by third-party payors and Ability to enrolled as a CMS Medicare/Medicaid payor

  • Medical Staff Credentialing: Successful completion of credentialing for Medical Staff membership and appropriate clinical privileges sufficient to perform all required services

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Minimum five years of post-residency clinical practice
  • Demonstrated expertise in cancer survivorship care through formal training or substantial collaborative oncology experience
  • Experience managing medically complex adult patients
  • Experience developing clinical programs or service lines
  • Expertise in sexual health and survivorship-related quality-of-life issues
  • Educational leadership experience
  • Academic and/or research experience in survivorship care
