Job Description

Due to increasing demand for decarbonization expertise, we are seeking a Mechanical Project Engineer with Thermal Energy Network (TEN) expertise to join our Energy and Decarbonization Group in our Denver, CO office.

As a Project Engineer, you will be responsible for providing engineering analysis and associated designs specific to both existing building / campus and new construction projects. Please have a thorough understanding of building energy and distribution systems, including the ability to analyze existing and design new district energy systems, central plants, and thermal energy networks (including geothermal TENs) for large scale projects. As a part of Dewberry's Energy and Decarbonization group you will work with a team of specialized engineers on a variety of private, public, and federal projects. This individual will work closely with energy engineers in addition to other mechanical, electrical, plumbing/fire protection, civil, structural, architecture, and other disciplines to provide full-range services to our local, regional, and national clients. This role reports to the Discipline Manager.

Dewberry has a large team of Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing, and Structural (MEPS) engineers focused on design services for nationwide clients in specialized facility types and specialized design services. Our experience includes high performance buildings, net zero energy design, renewable energy technologies, microgrid and energy storage system design, energy recovery, energy and climate resilience, commissioning, retrocommissioning, energy audits and studies, carbon accounting, energy / carbon master planning, energy benchmarking, building analytics, water conservation, thermal storage, geothermal design, and other services related to decarbonization / electrification of the built environment. Our MEPS group contains subject matter experts in leadership roles in international professional organizations such as ASHRAE. Our repeat clients include K-12 schools; universities; cultural arts; healthcare facilities; state, local, and federal government agencies; and large global industrial manufacturers, among others. Key Required Skills:

    BS in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or Thermal Systems Engineering from an accredited college or university
  • Professional Engineer (PE).
    • Existing license or the ability to obtain licensure in CO within 3 months of hire is preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience
  • Energy Certifications and Accreditations, such as CGD, CEM, CDP, BEAP, BEMP, LEED AP BD+C, or interest in pursuing similar certifications

Responsibilities

The Mechanical Project Engineer would be expected to provide the following services to effectively and successfully complete projects.

  • Analyze, design, and optimize heating and cooling systems serving multiple buildings, campuses, or municipalities.
    • Strong experience assessing existing boilers, chillers, heat pumps, thermal energy storage systems, energy recovery, renewable energy systems, pumps, and airside equipment
    • Strong experience sizing, staging, and controlling new boilers, chillers, heat pumps, thermal energy storage systems, energy recovery, renewable energy systems, pumps, and airside equipment
    • Possess strong geothermal knowledge and / or have the ability to work closely with and integrate the knowledge of other geothermal experts on the team.
  • Develop hydraulic models and energy models
  • Optimize control sequences
  • Size and layout distribution piping
  • Balance building loads and peak demand to right-size the system and optimize energy performance
  • Assess TEN feasibility based on available site and building data, building load profiles, available space and existing above- and below-grade infrastructure, utility data and energy rates, incentives, and client timeline and budget
  • Understand project goals and requirements and define an actionable path forward to meet those objectives. Assign tasks to engineers, administrative staff, and technicians.
  • Training and development of technical staff
  • Assist in establishing and improving standards, practices, guidelines, and specifications for mechanical discipline area.
  • Provide "on-the-spot" advice and decisions - technical and cost estimates
  • Coordinate with all the disciplines involved, including outside consultants
  • Support proposals to provide professional services, including preparing scope of work, budgets, and schedules.
  • Technical interface with code officials and contractors
  • Comply with local, regional, and national Building Performance Standards
  • Understand and apply relevant code requirements
  • Engineer of Record


Required Skills & Required Experience

  • BS in Mechanical Engineering, Energy Engineering, or Thermal Systems Engineering from an accredited college or university
  • Professional Engineer (PE).
    • Existing license or the ability to obtain licensure in CO within 3 months of hire is preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience
  • Energy Certifications and Accreditations, such as CGD, CEM, CDP, BEAP, BEMP, LEED AP BD+C, or interest in pursuing similar certifications
  • Participation in or interest in becoming involved in local chapters of Engineering organizations, such as ASHRAE.
  • Experience should include the ability to:
    • Apply a broad knowledge of principles and practices in the mechanical and energy engineering field
    • Work independently with moderate supervision and direction
    • Work on smaller projects or on portions of larger projects
    • Produce deliverables that meet client goals and timelines while adhering to the project budget
    • Detail oriented design and analysis
  • Strong knowledge of energy engineering fundamentals, including thermodynamics, heat transfer, and fluid dynamics with a demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge to projects of varying complexity.
  • Self-motivated with highly developed verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Well-organized, takes good notes, and able to balance competing priorities.
  • Strong technical writing capabilities, with writing samples available upon request.

The projected range for this position is $136,850 to $195,500 annually. Depending upon other factors, i.e., skills, experience, location, market conditions, the range may vary slightly.
