| Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The School of Government at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill works to improve the lives of North Carolinians by engaging in practical scholarship that helps public officials and citizens understand and improve state and local government. As the largest university-based local government training, advisory, and research organization in the United States, the School of Government offers up to 300 courses, webinars, and specialized conferences for more than 14,000 public officials each year. In addition, faculty members annually publish approximately 50 books, manuals, reports, articles, bulletins, and other print and online content related to state and local government. | Position Summary |
The Executive Assistant provides primary administrative and personal support to the Dean of the School of Government and works closely with other members of the School's leadership team, including the associate deans. The position carries a mix of routine and complex responsibilities, ranging from standardized office support to administrative work requiring initiative and independent decision-making. Core duties include calendar and meeting management, project and committee coordination, event planning, office coordination, travel arrangements, and reconciliation of the Dean's purchasing cards. The position requires a high degree of professionalism, sound judgment, and discretion. The Executive Assistant serves as a primary point of contact for the Dean's Office and interacts regularly with program staff, managers across School units, representatives of other state agencies and universities, donors, clients, service recipients, elected and appointed officials at the highest levels of state government, the media, and the general public. A consistently responsive, service-oriented, and high-touch approach to customer service is an essential function of this position. This is an in-person position with limited flexibility for remote work. |
| Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
High school diploma or equivalency and three years of progressively responsible administrative/office management experience; or Associate's degree in secretarial science, business administration, or a related discipline and one year of progressively responsible administrative/office management experience ; or Bachelor's degree, preferably in business administration or a related discipline; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |

- Experience working in a university or higher education setting
- Communications experience
- Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite, including Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Teams
- Comfort with A/V systems and virtual meeting platforms
- Knowledge of state and local government |
