As part of Itron's international and multicultural Firmware organization, the Firmware Engineer will support the development and lifecycle of embedded technologies that enable reliable, connected solutions for the utilities and energy industry.
.

The Firmware Engineer actively contributes to new product development and the enhancement and customization of existing technologies. Working collaboratively with local and global engineering teams, this role participates across the development lifecycle for a broad portfolio of solutions, including residential and light commercial and industrial products, connected devices and communication systems.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, test, debug, document, and maintain embedded firmware throughout the product development lifecycle, from initial concept and design through deployment and sustained product support.
  • Develop reliable and maintainable firmware using C/C++, applying appropriate embedded software design principles, coding standards, and development practices.
  • Develop and maintain unit tests and other automated or manual test capabilities that improve firmware quality, reliability, and regression coverage.
  • Collaborate with hardware, systems, test, manufacturing, product, and other engineering teams to translate product and system requirements into firmware solutions.
  • Participate in technical design discussions, design reviews, code reviews, failure analysis, and other engineering activities that support high-quality product development.
  • Operate effectively within a rigorous development environment that supports regular internal integrations and external customer-facing system releases.
  • Perform hands-on firmware debugging and troubleshooting in a hardware laboratory environment using appropriate diagnostic and test equipment.
  • Identify, reproduce, analyze, document, and resolve firmware defects, errors, performance issues, and system inconsistencies using established engineering practices and root-cause analysis techniques.
  • Implement features that align with applicable industry standards, including ISO and IEEE requirements where relevant, and support products operating within approved regulatory frameworks such as FCC and UL.
  • Work with embedded operating environments, device interfaces, communications protocols, and hardware components to ensure reliable interaction between firmware and the broader system.
  • Support integration activities across firmware, hardware, communications, and system-level components, including investigation of issues that span multiple technical domains.
  • Contribute to firmware architecture and technical solutions that consider reliability, performance, memory utilization, power consumption, maintainability, security, and long-term product support.
  • Develop or maintain scripts, utilities, and engineering tools that improve development, test, debugging, automation, or product-support workflows.
  • Use version control and established development workflows to manage source code, collaborate with other engineers, review changes, and maintain software configuration integrity.
  • Create and maintain clear technical documentation, including design information, interface definitions, test information, defect documentation, and implementation details.
  • Support products after deployment throughout their extended lifecycle, including initial programming, firmware upgrades, maintenance releases, field investigations, and low-battery or end-of-life scenarios.
  • Investigate field and customer-reported issues in partnership with engineering and customer-facing teams, helping translate observations into reproducible technical problems and sustainable solutions.
  • Consider backward compatibility and product lifecycle requirements when implementing changes to products

Required Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent relevant education and professional experience.
  • Foundational understanding of software or firmware development concepts, including structured programming, debugging, testing, and software development lifecycle practices.
  • C/C++ firmware development: Experience developing, debugging, testing, or maintaining C/C++ applications, particularly software designed to operate within resource-constrained embedded environments. Ability to analyze technical problems methodically, identify root causes, evaluate potential solutions, and communicate findings clearly.
  • Ability to work effectively in a collaborative engineering environment involving firmware, hardware, systems, test, manufacturing, and other technical disciplines.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical requirements, specifications, design documentation, and engineering information.
  • Demonstrated commitment to producing reliable, maintainable, and well-documented technical work.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across teams, disciplines, and locations.

Preferred Skills & Experience
  • Embedded systems: Experience developing software or firmware for microcontrollers, processors, connected devices, metering products, communication devices, sensors, or similar embedded platforms.
  • Real-Time Operating Systems: Familiarity with RTOS concepts such as tasks or threads, scheduling, synchronization, interrupts, queues, timing, resource management, and inter-task communication.
  • Scripting and automation: Experience with at least one scripting or development language such as Python, Ruby, PowerShell, Linux shell scripting, or C#, particularly for test automation, engineering utilities, data analysis, build processes, or development tooling.
  • Computer architecture: Understanding of processor and microcontroller architecture, memory organization, registers, interrupts, peripherals, boot processes, memory constraints, and hardware/software interfaces.
  • Low-level development: Familiarity with assembly language, boot loaders, device drivers, board-support packages, or other low-level embedded software is beneficial.
  • Hardware and firmware integration: Experience troubleshooting interactions between firmware and electronic hardware, including the ability to interpret schematics or hardware documentation and investigate system behavior in a laboratory environment.
  • Laboratory debugging: Experience using tools such as debuggers, oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, or similar equipment to investigate embedded system behavior.
  • Communications and networking: Understanding of network protocols, layered communication models, device-to-device communications, task-to-task communications, wired or wireless communication technologies, or related networking concepts.
  • RF systems: Exposure to radio-frequency communication concepts or wireless embedded products, especially where firmware interfaces with RF subsystems or communications stacks.
