About the Department:

The Kinesiology Program within the Department of Kinesiology, Sport, and Hospitality Management advances the scientific understanding of human movement, exercise, and physical activity to improve health, performance, and quality of life across the lifespan. Through interdisciplinary and translational research, evidence-based teaching, and community-engaged practice, the program prepares students and generates scholarship addressing how exercise and physical activity interventions drive adaptation to support health span, functional independence, and performance in both general and special populations. Faculty pursue externally funded, interdisciplinary research and mentor MS and PhD students in original scholarship, while CAAHEP-accredited curricula and clinical, sport performance, and allied health internships translate that research into evidence-based practice and prepare graduates for careers as exercise physiologists, sports scientists, strength and conditioning coaches, health and wellness professionals, or research.

About the Position:

The purpose of this tenure-line faculty position is to advance the Kinesiology Program's research, teaching, and mentorship mission through research expertise across the exercise-body-brain axis in human subjects. In particular, how physical activity and nutritional interventions drive related metabolic, cardiovascular, and neurological adaptation to optimize health span and performance across the lifespan. The incumbent's translational research program will emphasize nutritional or physical activity interventions for metabolic, cardiovascular, and/or neurological health in populations with and without disease, with applied contributions to emerging, well-funded areas. The incumbent will provide research leadership by conducting and disseminating original research, securing and maintaining external funding, and mentoring MS and PhD students' research, theses, and dissertations.

The position will also support the program's teaching mission, contribute to the ongoing development of the program, and maintain professional engagement to further the Kinesiology Program's and KSHM's shared commitment to research of consequence, impactful teaching, and community-engaged practice.

Responsibilities:

Research

  • Conduct and disseminate original research with human subjects;
  • Secure and maintain external grant funding;
  • Build and lead research teams; mentor and chair students' research, theses, and dissertations; and
  • Maintain an active national/international scholarly profile.

Teaching

  • Teach courses across the kinesiology program (2 courses per fall and spring semester as part of a standard 40/40/20 workload). Grants may be used to reduce teaching load.

Service

  • Provide service to the program, department, college, university, and profession, including supporting accreditation, contributing to program and curriculum development, engaging in community partnerships, and participating in professional organizations relevant to the field.

Required Qualifications:

  • Terminal degree in a related field;
  • Demonstrated expertise in exercise physiology, neuroscience, or relevant area;
  • Experience building and leading research teams;
  • Prior teaching experience;
  • Strong record of externally funded research;
  • Strong record of peer-reviewed scholarly publication and presentation at national/international venues;
  • Strong record of research mentorship;
  • Knowledge of exercise physiology principles governing metabolic, cardiovascular, and musculoskeletal adaptation to physical activity and nutritional interventions in human subjects;
  • Skill in designing and conducting translational, human-subjects research studies addressing metabolic, cardiovascular, or neurocognitive health;
  • Ability to secure and manage external research funding as principal or co-investigator;
  • Ability to mentor graduate students through the design, execution, and dissemination of independent research; and
  • Ability to teach undergraduate and graduate coursework in exercise physiology effectively across diverse student populations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with female research populations, older adults, or military/tactical populations;
  • Knowledge of neuromuscular assessment methods as applied to exercise research with human subjects;
  • Skill in physiological or neurocognitive monitoring technologies used to predict and track health and performance outcomes in special populations;
  • Ability to develop interdisciplinary research collaborations spanning kinesiology, neuroscience, medicine, or relevant fields; and
  • Ability to translate research findings into applied protocols for clinical, military, first-responder, or other special populations.
