The Office of the Vice President for Research, Scholarship and Creative Endeavors at UT Austin seeks an experienced data scientist who will serve as Program Director of Data and AI for Health Research. Partnering with research leaders and faculty across the University, this position will focus on increasing capacity for innovative research around artificial intelligence in the biomedical sciences. Specifically, this position will work across University units to develop and shepherd a data strategy for AI research in healthcare. The position will be embedded within the Texas Advanced Computing Center (TACC) at the JJ Pickle Research Campus of UT.

Must be eligible to work in the US on a full-time basis for any employer without sponsorship.

Purpose

The position will partner with research leaders and faculty across the University, focusing to increase capacity for innovative research around artificial intelligence in the biomedical sciences.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborates across all areas of the University to understand existing AI data capabilities and gaps. Develops and executes a strategic plan that identifies key priorities for building data infrastructure for the University research community, focused on AI in biomedical research.
  • Leads the establishment of, and maintains a collaborative and transparent relationship with, a robust network of University faculty and researchers in the biomedical, engineering and computer sciences who are engaged in AI research.
  • Responsible for developing a collaborative research network with internal and external partners to develop best practices around data architecture, standardization, and curation.
  • Researches national best practices and benchmarks for curating health data and collaborates with University research community to identify opportunities to develop improvements or solutions to existing infrastructure.
  • Contributes to the overall success of the team within the Office of the Vice President for Research, Scholarship and Creative Endeavors by performing other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications

The successful candidate will demonstrate a passion for the organization's mission and possess the

relevant experience, background, and leadership competencies to enhance the organization's profile and further its impact.

  • Master's degree in data science, mathematics, statistics, computer science, artificial intelligence, or engineering.
  • Proven experience in designing data collection systems.
  • Familiarity with the key concepts and elements of AI and machine learning.
  • Understanding of principles of data ethics, and how to avoid or reduce biases to build ethical, responsible AI models.
  • Familiarity with data privacy practices and laws (e.g., HIPAA).
  • Excellent demonstrated writing skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% to engage with project stakeholders.
  • Scripting or programming skills suitable for manipulation of data

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. degree in computer science, data science, mathematics, artificial intelligence or engineering.
  • At least 5 years of relevant experience working as data analyst or scientist, particularly in the healthcare field.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate and manage program delivery involving university faculty participants.
  • Ability to distill complex research and scholarly concepts into simple terms that convey impact to general audiences.
  • Proven ability to work with minimal direction, formulate research plans, solve tough problems, and take initiative.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal communication skills.

Work Shift
  • Flexible work hours between 7am and 6pm central standard time
  • Employee must meet all of the qualifications outlined in the University's Flexible Work Arrangement Policy and submit all required documentation to participate in remote work

Retirement Plan Eligibility:

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
