Job Summary

The Network Engineer, Wired will play a crucial role in the Network Services team within Infrastructure Services to support the design, implementation, optimization, administration and technical documentation of all wired network infrastructure. The Network Engineer, Wired will work to ensure the reliability, availability, and scalability of all wired network solutions. The Network Engineer, Wired will participate in the resolution of complex technical issues in a timely manner while delivering best-in-class wired service support across UCSF. This role will conduct day-to-day network engineering and technical support for wired network infrastructure to ensure that systems are operating at peak efficiency with little to no downtime.

The Network Engineer, Wired will positively impact UCSF's operations and culture by ensuring UCSF's IT infrastructure is operable, secure, efficient, and effective in service of the UCSF's academic mission. This team member will advance the UCSF's mission by delivering exceptional information technology services comprehensively and consistently across stakeholders. This role will execute the University's vision while modeling UCSF's culture and values

The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy.

Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement.

The salary range for this position is $105,900 - $225,900 (Annual Rate).

The Network Services team within Infrastructure Services holds a critical role in managing, maintaining, and developing the company's computer network infrastructure, particularly ensuring reliable technical accessibility for individuals engaged in vital medical and health research work. Their core responsibilities include providing secure internet and network services, managing IT services, and maintaining data systems. They support end-users, manage system updates, repairs, and connectivity issues, and play an essential role in troubleshooting network issues, optimizing performance, and implementing protocols. They also oversee software and hardware updates, and manage data storage, disaster recovery, and network resilience. Beyond this, Network Services provides specialized technical support to other employees in the organization, with a focus on those involved in medical and health research.

Required Qualifications


  • Bachelor's Degree, or equivalent combination of experience/training, in one or more of the following fields: computer science, engineering, computer information systems, etc.
  • 5 -7 years Experience working in one or more of the following fields: network services, field services, information technology or network operations.
  • Advanced knowledge with enterprise networking technologies, tools and processes, including routing and switching, L4-7 traffic management (e.g., load balancing), data-center fabric, campus networks, VoIP virtualization, and hybrid cloud. Proficiency with network operating systems (e.g., Cisco Switching/routing, Juniper, and Aruba switching/routing).
  • Experience with network technologies like LAN, WAN, and VPN; Experience with network security technologies, such as IPSec, SSL, and firewall rules. Understanding of network protocols such as TCP/IP, Ethernet, MPLs, or others that are critical to the design and operation of complex networks.
  • Thorough understanding of modern enterprise TCP/IP data networks using standards and technologies including but not limited to: OSPF, BGPv4, EIGRP, STP, RSTP, 802.1Q, Multicast, VRF-lite, QoS, and IPSec.
  • Experience with L2 protocols including STP, DHCP, 802.1X, LACP, MLAG, VXLAN bridging, etc. Proficient with addressing mechanisms (DNS, DHCP, IPAM, or similar), and practical experience with L1 technologies (SMF, MMF, DWDM, Transceivers, AOC, Twinax, Fiber fan-outs, or similar).
  • Firm understanding of TACACS/RADIUS, and experience with network traffic analysis for troubleshooting (tcpdump, Wireshark, Netflow/sFlow, iperf, etc).
  • Exposure to or experience with programming/scripting languages used to automate networks (e.g., Python, Ansible).
  • Demonstrated experience with L3 protocols and techniques, including MP-BGP, OSPF, VXLAN routing, VRFs, VRRP, and VARP, or similar. Experience with other network protocols and methods, including Traffic Engineering, NAT, TCP/IP, Multicast, and IPv6. Experience deploying Cisco Access Switches, Cisco Routers, Aruba Access Switches and Cisco Nexus switches in a datacenter environment.
  • Familiarity with hosted environments such as AWS, Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, or Azure.
  • Implement cloud connectivity solutions using AWS Direct Connect, Google Cloud Platform Cloud Interconnect, and Azure Express Route.
  • Knowledge of network security principles, practices, and technologies such as firewalls, intrusion detection systems (IDS), and virtual private networks (VPN). Familiarity with compliance standards and security frameworks relevant to network security, such as ISO 27001, NIST, GDPR, etc.
  • Knowledge of network hardware, including routers, switches, hubs, and modems.
  • Familiarity with network management and monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds, Nagios, Wireshark).
  • Experience working with telco providers to resolve latency and bandwidth issues and ISP configuration.
  • Ability to analyze, diagnose, and troubleshoot complex network systems to identify issues and inefficiencies. Ability to implement detailed network designs in a real-world environment. Ability to quickly assimilate complex information and develop effective network solutions.
  • Experience troubleshooting and deploying solutions involving certificates and public key infrastructures such as 802.1x or SSL decryption and offloading.
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal regulations related to IT systems, privacy laws, safety standards, and service level agreement adherence. Familiarity with disaster recovery principles and practices related to network infrastructure.
  • Ability to support the design and implementation of effective business continuity strategies for network operations.
  • Advanced organizational skills and is able to balance competing priorities and support concurrent projects.
  • Experience working in a project-based environment using leading project management practices including schedule management, status reporting, and communication of project risks and issues.
