College: Carver College of Medicine
Department: Anesthesia

Salary
Salary: $61,008.00 to Commensurate

Position Details
Full/Part Time Status: Full Time
Percent Time: 100%
Position Description:

The Obal lab utilizes human inducible pluripotent stem cells (iPSC) cells from patients (healthy and those suffering from opioid dependency) as a platform to investigate the function of opioid receptors, the molecular movements and heterodimerization of G protein-coupled receptors, and the impact of chronic opioid administration on cardiovascular development. Not much is known yet about the chronic effect of opioids on human tissue (i.e., the cardiovascular system and endothelium), since previous work has been mostly focused on opioids acute effects in rodents.

Through our close collaboration with the Joseph Wu laboratory (Stanford Cardiovascular Institute, Stanford University), our lab has access to one of the largest iPSC biobanks in the United States, which give us access to multiple cell lineages carrying mutation in multiple genes key for cardiovascular function and development. Successful candidates will work independently in a dynamic research team within the University of Iowa research community.

Education Requirement:

  • MD and/or Ph.D. in Physiology, pharmacology, or biochemistry.

Required Qualifications:

  • Strong laboratory, analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Clear writing skills should be evident by candidate's prior publications.
  • Be able to work independently but be willing to collaborate with multiple research groups within our world-class institution.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Previous experience with iPSC and/or stem cell technology.
  • Experience with RNA sequencing, gene editing (CRISPR-Cas9), single particle imaging, and large data set analysis.
  • Proficiency in programming languages like R, python, Matlab
