Position Summary Information


Primary Purpose
The Group Fitness Tiger X Instructor is responsible for developing and instructing fun, energetic, and highly motivational group fitness classes. Instructors continually monitor participant needs and progress through safe exercises/routines, while creating a dynamic workout experience.
Essential Functions

  • Maintain responsibility for all regularly scheduled and assigned classes within Pacific Recreation.
  • Conduct classes for participants following protocols as accepted and provided by the Baun Fitness Center including:

    • Proper warm-up, class routine, and a cool down/stretch session.
    • Accompany your class with appropriate music.
    • Instruct within your knowledge and expertise.
    • Be attentive to participant safety during class time.
    • Create a supportive environment and bring positive energy to Tiger X classes.
    • Model, promote, and consistently enforce Campus Recreation policies.



  • Execute fitness-related special events.
  • Respond to participants' questions and comments with superior customer service.
  • Assist in the maintenance of fitness-related equipment and inventory. Make recommendations for future program purchases.
  • Find class coverage for assigned classes when a substitute is needed.
  • Clock-in and out during all hours worked. Check, count, and record total participation after every class.
  • Report any major issues, problems, or concerns directly to professional staff.
  • Be on time and prepared for work. On time is five (5) minutes before each class, appointment, or meeting. Attend all fitness staff meetings, in-services, and individually-requested meetings.
  • Instructor must provide a safe and enjoyable environment for the participant during instruction which includes a full range of physical abilities including performing and maintaining aerobic exercise, jogging, dancing, stepping, marching, hopping, skipping, jumping, bending, stretching, and lifting a minimal weight. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to walk, talk or hear, use hands and fingers handle or feel objects, tools, or controls; and reach with hands and arms.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School education, or High School Diploma, or GED.
  • Current fitness certification from a Pacific Rec approved education association such as ACSM, ACE, NASM, NSCA, AFFA, NFPT, NPTI, ZUMBA etc.
  • Current CPR/AED certification or obtain within 30 days of hire. In-house certification provided, if necessary.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to talk in front of large groups.
  • Holds two (2) national certifications in different fitness Class types.
  • Holds one (1) national certification and holds Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • One (1) year of teaching/training experience.
  • Experience and sensitivity in working with people of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Demonstrated experience in advancing social justice, equity, and inclusion in a university setting.
  • Ability to engage and integrate culturally responsive practices and knowledge in their work.

Must possess physical strength and flexibility. Coordination, rhythm, and timing skills are also necessary. Must have the strength and ability to safely lift and move up to 25 lbs.

Work Environment/Work Week/Travel:
Classes are scheduled Monday through Sunday and may include early morning hours, afternoon hours and evening hours.
Hiring Range $16.50 per hour. We consider factors such as, but not limited to, scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's qualifications, internal equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.
