Interventional Radiology Job Summary

Interventional Radiology Technologist assists physicians in interventional procedures and provides diagnostic aid by conducting organ or body scans on patients. Administers and records isotope dosage in accordance with established departmental guidelines. Being an Interventional Radiology Technologist assists in observing patient during procedure, provides set-up & takedown of procedure room with necessary supplies, and retrieves anything requested by physician during procedure.

Essential Functions:
  • As part of the Interventional Radiology team, an IR Technologist is responsible for primary set-up & takedown of each procedure. Technologist operates imaging equipment available in IR procedure rooms and adjusts based on real-time instructions from physician. Technologist is responsible for retrieving in necessary medical supplies for each procedure. (35%)
  • Prepares and administers contrast media for patient examinations according to radiologists' direction. Technologist must be certified in CPR at all times, must complete contrast questionnaires. Technologist must ensure that the IV catheter, if used, is of appropriate type, size, and in the correct location for contrast administration by means of an injector. Technologists must test injector with saline prior to contrast injection. This standard cannot be exceeded. (10%)
  • Operates, on a day-to-day basis, PACS applications to include: archiving activities; image auto-routing; and pre-fetching tasks; image quality assurance and other related activities. (10%)
  • Ensures patient safety, comfort, and personal dignity by following appropriate patient care guidelines to include use of 2 patient identifiers. (5%)
  • Assists in the maintenance of department inventory by ordering, stocking, and performing inventory checks on those medical supplies utilized when performing IR examinations. Consistent availability of requisite IR medical supplies indicate exceeds standard. More than 3 incidents of supply unavailability indicate failure to meet standard. (10%)
  • Maintains imaging and processing equipment by performing scheduled cleanings and tests; results of all cleanings and tests are documented, as appropriate. Contacts service personnel and notifies supervisory staff of equipment malfunctions. (5%)
  • Maintains a clean and orderly working environment through wiping down examination tables, changing linens, stocking supplies, and washing/disinfecting IR equipment. The standard cannot be exceeded. (20%)
  • Uses Radiology Information System (RIS) system to input patient examination data and to place patient orders, when appropriate. (5%)

Education:
  • Associate's Degree RTR-RT Radiography - ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Required
  • RTCT-RT Computed Tomography - ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists - Preferred
  • RTVI-RT Vascular Interventional Radiography - ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists - Preferred

Work Experience:
  • 1-3 years professional work experience required in radiography and minimum 6 months of experience working in a procedural-based department Required

Licenses:
  • BLS-Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) - AHA - American Heart Association Required and
  • RTR-RT Radiography - ARRT - American Registry of Radiologic Technologists Required

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge in how to operate IR equipment and related technology.
  • Competency in technical skill set in the performance of IR imagining studies.
  • Knowledge of how to address age-specific care needs of patients.
  • Effective interpersonal skill sets that lead to productive communications and collaborations.
  • Competency in interpreting physician order requests for IR imaging studies.
  • Ability to exercise prudent judgment in selecting and configuring equipment settings to compensate for patient physiologic variances.
  • Ability to consistently produce quality images pf various structures.
