Description

The Human-Computer Interaction Institute at Carnegie Mellon University is pleased to announce an adjunct faculty opening to co-teach the Digital Service Innovation course. The adjunct will attend class in-person two days per week where they participate in lectures, discuss readings and facilitate critiques. They will arrive about 15 minutes before class starts to confer with their co-teacher. Outside of class adjuncts will use the Canvas learning management system to grade student projects, prepare the assignments, and reply to students' discussions of assigned reading. They will meet individual students and teams in-person or remotely to discuss their work.

Adjuncts must be available on both Monday and Wednesday, class starts at 8am and concludes at 9:50am.

Compensation

The effective date of appointment is January 2025. Salary is $11,000 for the spring semester of Digital Service Innovation and is paid monthly between January and May 2025.


Qualifications

Qualifications

We seek an industry practitioner with significant experience in the context of a start-up or early stage company using methods originating from human-computer interaction and business including;




  • Derive insight from secondary research methods such as POG, PESTLE, SET and literature reviews, and primary research methods such as guerilla research, directed storytelling, field-based ethnography, digital ethnography, remote research and non-reactive research



  • Practical experience leading teams to practice human-centered design, customer discovery, design thinking, problem framing/reframing, service design, lean start-up, disruption, outcome-driven innovation, jobs-to-be-done and innovation frameworks



  • Experience creating value flow maps, conceptual models, service blueprints, experience maps, customer journey mapping, personas, visual conversations with whiteboard sketching, rapid idea generation, prototyping, validation and testing





We seek a seasoned practitioner who has developed deep knowledge of innovative digital services as a result of having worked on many projects at the intersection of design, business, technology and investment. The qualified applicant will be perceived as a leader by peers and can demonstrate a history of conveying knowledge to others, helping them apply it and instilling confidence to select the appropriate method for a given problem. The qualified candidate will be able to draw on many different industry experiences to illustrate the interplay between interaction design, research, business strategy and technology.

A Bachelor's Degree in design or a related field is required for this position.
