Johns Hopkins University is looking for a versatile and enthusiastic Content Manager to help lead a robust storytelling and web content operation at the Hopkins Bloomberg Center in Washinton, DC. The Content Manager plays a lead role in the creation and curation of content for the Hopkins Bloomberg Center (HBC) website and other digital platforms, ensuring that the editorial vision is executed, editorial processes are followed, and strategic objectives are met.

The Content Manager works daily with the Hopkins Bloomberg Center director of communications, the social media and marketing manager, the multimedia manager and the audience engagement manager to plan, promote, execute, and report on key events taking place at the Hopkins Bloomberg Center as well as raising the visibility of Hopkins research and expertise for policymakers and other targeted audiences. This includes researching and evaluating story ideas from all divisions of the university, editing and writing features, news items, and other stories when appropriate; and collaborating with writers and graphic designers and others.

The Content Manager must be adept at translating complex information into concise and compelling content for lay people and skilled at developing content and channel strategies to engage a diverse range of audiences. Candidates should bring a deep understanding of editorial, digital, and content strategy and keep abreast of new and emerging trends in news delivery and audience engagement. The ideal candidate is both a thinker and a doer who is hands-on with day-to-day responsibilities while also managing a larger vision and priorities, and a leader who can work effectively with internal and external stakeholders and partners, guide staff members and faculty, and manage complex projects to completion.

About the Hopkins Bloomberg Center:

A bustling hub of collaboration, dialogue and discovery right in the heart of the nation's Capital, the Hopkins Bloomberg Center hosts daily in-person, hybrid and virtual programming from all corners of the John Hopkins University community. The Center frequently partners with prominent domestic and international organizations, as well as government entities and multilateral institutions, to create programming that brings Johns Hopkins policy expertise, research, and data to the forefront of the policymaking conversation in Washington and beyond.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities

  • Leads editing and production of content for the Hopkins Bloomberg Center website and publications (as well as for other University outlets that may be covering HBC initiatives), with a focus on event coverage, signature series, and feature storytelling on Hopkins's research and expertise for a policy audience.
  • Consults regularly with the Hopkins Bloomberg Center Communications Director, University Communications Content Director and other team members to discuss editorial planning and story ideas, ensuring that the editorial vision for the website is adhered to, editorial processes are followed, and strategic objectives are met.
  • Plays a lead role in the planning and production of the Hopkins Bloomberg Center newsletters and other relevant publications, including assigning, editing, and producing content, with full responsibility for delivering high-quality, engaging content.
  • Develops story ideas, crafts story budgets and works with external vendors as needed.
  • Works with designers to create in-house ads as necessary.
  • Maintains contact with and solicits feedback from key stakeholders within the Hopkins Bloomberg Center and university writ large.
  • Monitors peer institutions and other organizations to maintain knowledge of emerging trends and best practices in magazine content and publishing both inside and outside of higher education.
  • Contributes to internal reporting and to internal communications for the benefit of students, faculty and staff within the building.
  • Copy edits and ensure content conforms to appropriate style guidelines and standards.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Demonstrated ability to think creatively about content and communications and to execute strategic approaches to writing, storytelling, content presentation, and content promotion across digital and print channels.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and problem-solving skills, including experience working independently to prioritize and set objectives and a collaborative working style.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and communicate effectively with administrators at the highest levels of the university, alumni leadership, faculty, and key colleagues and collaborators.
  • Demonstrated excellence and versatility in writing and editing.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce digital content quickly and accurately, including experience with website content management systems.
  • Sound, reliable editorial and news judgment.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, and adept at working independently to juggle multiple assignments and meet deadlines.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in related field.
  • Five years related experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.


Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's Degree preferred.
  • Experience with search engine optimization, Google Analytics, social media tools, HTML, and Photoshop preferred.
  • Experience in online journalism and working with digital publishing tools.
